"Bill Evans," Oil on Canvas Panel, 9x12. December 2013.

portrait painting of jazz musician Sun Ra, 9" X 12", oil on canvas board. 2 hours, just fooling around, trying something a bit different color-wise, and trying to be loose. This painting is based on an anonymous black & white photo. (painting (c) 2013 Paul David Elsen)

"Portrait of Sun Ra", oil on canvas, 11" X 14"; 3 hours. Sun Ra was an unsung giant of jazz, leading a communal modern jazz orchestra for many decades from the late 40's until his passing in the early 90's, Claiming to hail from Saturn his music (led from the keyboard) ranged from post-Ellington styled elegance (with a heavy kinship to Mingus and Monk) to sounds which rivaled the outer reaches of Coltrane or The Grateful Dead (and even more avant garde than that sometimes) to funk. This painting based on anonymous on-line photo of the musician. My rendition (c) Paul David Elsen)

"Lennie Tristano '55", oil on canvas, 10" X 10". A blue portrait of the important jazz pianist and teacher. (painting (c) Paul David Elsen, based on a photo by unknown photographer from the cover of Lennie Tristano Unreleased Recordings 1955)
